Engine 302 / Ladder 155

History of Engine Company 302

Engine Company 302 began as a volunteer company known as "Distler Hose Company #3", located on Rockaway Avenue (now 150th Street) between the LIRR and Fulton Street (now Jamaica Avenue). Along with 74 other volunteer companies, Distler Hose protected residents of what is now Queens County. Chapter 378 of the New York State Laws of 1897 provided that communities within Queens be united with Kings and Richmond Counties into the municipality of the City of New York. Section 722 of the Charter of the Greater City was established to cover the amalgamation of the current paid departments along with the conversion of the volunteer units into a single paid department designated the Fire Department of the City of New York.

1905 saw the beginning of the elimination of the volunteer departments in Staten Island and the Rockaways.  Engine Company 302 was officially established on July 5th 1907 in the quarters of Distler Hose Company #3. Engine 302 served there until November 9th, 1912 when it was relocated to 137-24 Rockaway Boulevard. The company occupied its current quarters at 143-15 Rockaway Boulevard on January 31st, 1931.

Through the years, Engine 302 responded to an ever increasing amount of runs in the expanding and diverse area of Southern Queens. The company also became the first due unit at Idlewild Airport, which would eventually be renamed to John. F. Kennedy International Airport.

In addition to the “routine” work of extinguishing residential fires, Engine 302 saw it’s role increase to providing rescue efforts for auto accidents on  new roadways, Emergency Medical Care beginning in 1996, hazardous materials responses, and , regrettably, first responder duties at terrorism events.

Engine Company 302 has responded to thousands upon thousands of emergencies, with some that stand out above the rest:

· June 1975: 727 Plane Crash on Rockaway Boulevard

· September 11th, 2001: Rescue and Recovery efforts

    at the World Trade Center

· November 2001: Plane Crash in the Rockaways

Today, Engine 302 remains poised and ready to respond to the needs of the community and to the greater City of New York. While its duties may change, the company’s primary mission remains the same; to serve the residents of New York in their time of need, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.
